🔊 Can't hear the pronunciation?

The vocabulary, speaking and JLPT listening pages read Japanese aloud with your device's own Japanese voice.

Best browser: on iPhone/iPad use Safari, on Android use Google Chrome. Both use your phone's built-in Japanese voice.

If you still hear an English accent, set up the voice on your device:

  • iPhone / iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → add Japanese (for example Kyoko). Make sure the phone is not on mute.
  • Android: Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output → make sure the Google engine has the Japanese language downloaded.
  • Desktop Chrome: uses Google's online Japanese voice automatically, so it should just work.

New to Japanese? Go in order: kana reading first, then flashcards, then vocabulary, speaking, daily conversation, particles, adjectives, verbs and the て-form, counting, and time and dates. When you feel ready, try the JLPT N5 practice test.
